Overview
In the world of Formula 3 racing, winning is everything. Every second, and every hundredth of a second, counts to get on the podium. To get to the next level and edge-out the competition, companies are constantly looking for ways to be lighter and faster. At the University of Wolverhampton Racing (UWR) this pursuit has become a mission.
Within the first two years of F3 racing the team has worked towards the perfect systems dynamic of inter-related components to achieve the optimal speed at every corner encountered; earning seven wins and 16 podium finishes so far. They’ve made this happen with a team of 37 students and professors and leading-edge new techniques and methodologies that have the top automotive manufacturers paying attention.
These methods and practices go beyond the race track to bring efficiencies to modern-day design within automotive workflows. This webinar will cover techniques such as design, engineering simulation, analysis, additive manufacturing and rapid prototyping.
On the track and in the lab, the best performance is critical, and the right hardware is crucial in this fast-paced and varied environment. That’s why UWR trusts Lenovo’s workstation portfolio to seamlessly accomplish everything from heavy data analysis to component design, from 3D printing to mobile trackside analytics.
Learning Objectives:
- Catch a glimpse of how an industry professional packs end-to-end efficiency into their workflow
- Learn about new technology to ensure you can get the most out of any future hardware investment
- Utilising data and technology to inspire adaptation "on-the-fly" - how a laptop can win you an F3 race.
- Effective communication improves employability - lessons learned in a student motorsport team.

David Tucker
Principal Lecturer- Automotive Engineering & Motorsport Engineering, University of Wolverhampton Racing
David’s career has taken him from a mechanical apprenticeship via a performance vehicle tuning company, to Audi road cars. Following his first degree he was involved with engineering design, focusing on engine conceptual design.
After a variety of trackside & design projects, he began working with a company as chief technical director, setting up a race championship for bespoke vehicles. Following postgraduate studies David continued to work on engine design & optimisation and aerodynamic projects for performance vehicles.
He is currently overseeing the Automotive & Motorsport Engineering degrees at the University of Wolverhampton, along with running the Formula Student, Formula 3 and Morgan race teams.
Mark Stanford
Professor of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, University of Wolverhampton Racing
From a technical apprenticeship and 15 years industrial experience, Mark enrolled on a Manufacturing Engineering degree as a part-time student at Wolverhampton. He graduated with first-class honours in 1992 and began his successful career at the University in that year. He also studied part-time for his PhD at the University.
Mark secured his Professorship in 2014 and is now a leading expert in the field of additive layer manufacturing. With this expertise in constant demand he works regularly with high-profile organisations, including Formula 1 racing teams. He has published widely in fields of additive layer manufacturing, laser sintering, materials behaviour and properties, structural integrity, and machining of metals in inert atmospheres of argon and nitrogen.
